Affirmating in Peace: The Power of Imagination and Letting Go

Sometimes the most powerful messages come wrapped in laughter.

Recently, I saw a video posted by Meka Thomas on Facebook that was both hilarious and surprisingly profound. In the clip, she plays an exhausted mother sitting silently with a cup of coffee, staring at a plain black sheet taped to the wall. As her family bustles around her, she warns them in a deadpan voice:
โ€œLeave me alone. Iโ€™m affirmating. Iโ€™m taking a cruise. Iโ€™m enjoying it. Leave me alone.โ€

What makes it so funny isnโ€™t just her deliveryโ€”itโ€™s that sheโ€™s staring at a black sheet. Not a tranquil beach scene or a peaceful mountain landscape. Justโ€ฆ a black sheet.

And yet, thatโ€™s what makes it so powerful.


Imagination Isnโ€™t Just for Kids

Had she been gazing at a typical poster of an ocean or a palm tree, it wouldnโ€™t have hit the same. The absurdity of the black sheetโ€”and her total commitment to visualizing joy anywayโ€”is what makes it both funny and inspiring.

Because hereโ€™s the truth:
That black sheet can become anything she imagines.
And so can ours.

As we grow older, many of us lose our imagination. We trade wonder for routine. We hand over our mental space to TV shows, computers, news updates, opinions, and societal expectations. We stop dreaming. We stop playing. We stop creating from within.

But what if we reclaimed it?


A Return to Inner Freedom

What if we allowed ourselves to see the world again through the eyes of a child?
To wake up each day with awe, curiosity, and a heart wide open?

What if we could drop all the noiseโ€”every opinion, bias, fear, and judgmentโ€”and just be?
Neutral. Present. Peaceful.
What would happen then?

Maybe weโ€™d start to feel hope again. Joy again. That lightness that only comes from letting go.


Try This: The โ€œBlack Sheetโ€ Method

Take a few minutes today to tune it all out.
No screens. No thoughts. No expectations.

  • Sit quietly.
  • Close your eyes or stare at something simpleโ€”even a black sheet if you have one.
  • Breathe deeply.
  • Imagine youโ€™re on a cruise. Or a quiet beach. Or doing something youโ€™ve always wanted to do.

Give yourself full permission to go there. Feel it. Enjoy it.

Then wrap your arms around yourself and say,
โ€œI love you. Just the way you are.โ€
And hear me when I say this:
I love you too. And so do so many others.
You are wonderful and perfect, exactly as you are.


Because Sometimes, Affirmating Works.
