“Anora,” a touching and darkly humorous drama about a young exotic dancer’s entanglement with a Russian oligarch’s son, won the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.
Directed by Sean Baker, “Anora” stood out among 21 other films, including works by acclaimed directors like Francis Ford Coppola and David Cronenberg. Baker, known for his films focusing on the lives of sex workers, dedicated the award “to all sex workers past, present, and future.” He also thanked the film’s star, Mikey Madison, and his wife and producer, Samantha Quan. Overjoyed, Baker remarked, “This has been my life’s goal, so to reach this place is… I’m going to have to do some thinking tonight about what’s next.”
Jury president Greta Gerwig, director of the hit movie “Barbie,” praised “Anora” as an “incredibly human and humane film that captured our hearts.” The award was presented by George Lucas, celebrated creator of “Star Wars,” who received an honorary award from his longtime friend Coppola.
What an inspiring achievement for Sean Baker! ‘Anora’ sounds like a captivating film with a profound message. Congratulations to the entire team for winning the Palme d’Or! 🌟
