In a heartwarming announcement that has sparked excitement nationwide, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) is set to welcome two new giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, by the end of the year. This joyous news has delighted panda enthusiasts and conservationists alike, celebrating the continued success of NZCBI’s remarkable giant panda conservation program.
A New Chapter in Panda Conservation
For over five decades, NZCBI has been at the forefront of giant panda conservation, helping elevate the species’ status from “endangered” to “vulnerable.” The arrival of Bao Li and Qing Bao marks a significant milestone in this ongoing effort.
Brandie Smith, NZCBI’s John and Adrienne Mars Director, shared her enthusiasm: “This new chapter in our breeding and conservation partnership begins with the arrival of two new bears, including a descendent of our beloved panda family, here in Washington, D.C. This historic moment underscores the irrefutable impact of our collaboration with Chinese colleagues.”
Meet the New Pandas:
- Bao Li: A spirited two-year-old male, born on August 4, 2021. His name, meaning “treasure” and “energetic” in Mandarin, reflects his lively nature. Bao Li’s lineage is particularly special as his mother, Bao Bao, was born at NZCBI, continuing the legacy of his grandparents, Tian Tian and Mei Xiang.
- Qing Bao: A precious two-year-old female, born on September 12, 2021. Her name, meaning “green treasure,” symbolizes her cherished status and the lush habitats where giant pandas thrive.
A Heartwarming Announcement
The exciting news was unveiled in a video announcement featuring First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III, and Director Brandie Smith on NZCBI’s social media channels. This announcement comes just six months after the emotional farewell of Tian Tian, Mei Xiang, and Xiao Qi Ji, who returned to China, leaving a lasting impact on millions of panda fans across the nation.
Safe Journey to a New Home
FedEx, known for their dedicated Panda Express service, will ensure Bao Li and Qing Bao’s safe journey from China to their new home in Washington, D.C. Upon arrival, the pandas will undergo a standard 30-day quarantine to ensure their health and safety, with NZCBI’s expert team providing exceptional care and enrichment.
A Bright Future for Panda Conservation
The new cooperative agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA), effective through April 2034, highlights the ongoing commitment to giant panda conservation. This partnership will support breeding and research initiatives critical to the species’ survival and well-being.
In preparation for the pandas’ arrival, NZCBI has launched a fundraising campaign to support essential renovations and conservation efforts. Public and corporate donations will fund exhibit enhancements, panda cam upgrades, and vital research projects.
Since the first pandas arrived at the Zoo in 1972, they have captured the hearts of millions, becoming one of the most beloved attractions. The eagerly anticipated return of the Giant Panda Cam will allow fans worldwide to share in the excitement and follow Bao Li and Qing Bao’s journey.
This is such fantastic news! The arrival of Bao Li and Qing Bao is a wonderful milestone for panda conservation. Kudos to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute for their continued dedication and incredible efforts. I can’t wait to see these adorable pandas on the Panda Cam!
