At 25 years old and currently unsponsored, Beard’s journey to the Olympics is far from typical. When he’s not training rigorously to achieve his dreams, he works behind the deli counter at Walmart, a stark contrast to his high aspirations.
In February, Beard’s hard work paid off when he stormed to victory at the prestigious Millrose Games, bringing him one step closer to a potential debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Reflecting on his performance, Beard shared with TODAY last month, “I think I went in a lot more relaxed, like nothing to lose, a lot to gain.”
Despite his composed exterior, Beard admits there’s still an air of disbelief as he navigates this incredible year. “My goal was to build off what I did last year,” he revealed to ESSENCE. “With the Olympic Games this year, I wanted to make the team, but I had no idea this would be my 2024. It’s been truly a blessing.”
Beard’s journey began in school and continued through college, eventually leading him to Howard University. It was there that he met former Olympian David Oliver and the rest of the coaching staff who played a significant role in shaping him into the athlete he is today. “[At Howard University] I met former Olympian David Oliver, as well as the rest of the coaching staff, and it really shaped me up to be where I am at today as a professional,” Beard recounted.
Now, as a college graduate and a Baltimore native, Beard is more determined than ever to make a mark at the Olympic trials this summer. He remains focused on improving with each race and practice session. “We’re still competing to win, no matter what race it is. We want to drop those times down and get a little better each time we race and practice. That’s really the main goal. It’s just now a bigger goal, and maybe [there will be] a few more eyes watching.”
Dylan Beard’s story is one of resilience and dedication, proving that with hard work and perseverance, even the most unlikely dreams can come true. His journey to Paris 2024 is a testament to the power of determination and the support of a strong community and coaching team. As he continues to strive for excellence, the world will be watching, inspired by his unwavering commitment to his Olympic dream.
